Richard “Dick” John Schlamp, age 74, of New Hartford, Iowa, was born September 21, 1938, the son of Elmer and Sylvia (Christiansen) Schlamp on a farmstead near Dike. He received his education in the New Hartford School System. Dick spent part of his time growing up living with Mabel and LaGoria Smith, during which he worked at the Benson Creamery and the New Hartford Elevator.
Dick was united in marriage with Dena Doreen Muller on August 8, 1961, at the Methodist Church in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. They eventually made their home in the New Hartford area, where they built their current home and raised their family. Dick began working in 1960, for John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, in the foundry. He retired as a supervisory foreman at the age of 52 after 30 years of employment. Dick then went to work at the University of Northern Iowa in the Industrial Tech Department. He retired from UNI after 20 years.
Dick was a member of the New Hartford United Methodist Church. He was a past scout leader and a member of Toastmasters. Dick was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing. He liked reading and learning about history, particularly wars. Dick enjoyed metal casting, and had made several cannons, which he would fire off any chance he had. He also restored horse and buggy carriages. Dick liked traveling, watching westerns and had learned to be a pilot. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and University of Northern Iowa fan. Dick’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he loved dearly.
Dick died Thursday, January 31, 2013, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dick was survived by his wife of 51 years, Dena of New Hartford; three sons, Timothy Schlamp of Minneapolis, MN, Mitchel (Stephanie) Schlamp of Parkersburg, Jason (Tami) Schlamp of Marion; three daughters, Pamela Schlamp of Shell Rock, Jennifer (Neven) Mikic, of Kansas City, MO, Carey (Clifford) Taylor, of San Angelo, TX; 12 grandchildren, Teri, Alicia, Kristin (Joshua), Kacie, Derek, Cody, Haley, Megan, Ben, Maggie, Marin and Quinn; five great-grandchildren, Kayanne, Chloe, Aurora, Loki and Isabella and two more expected soon; one brother, Michael (Marlys) Schlamp of Cedar Falls; one brother-in-law, John E. (Harriett) Muller of Grundy Center; three sisters, Patricia Brinkman of Spokane, WA, Mary (Lee Roy) Gerloff of New Hartford and Barbara (Mike) Harper of New Hartford; two sister-in-laws, Lorraine Rieken of Marshalltown and Harriett Muller of Holland and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Parkersburg United Methodist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both Parkersburg.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, (319)346-1534 and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
