Jo Ann Malinda Voss, age 73, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born June 13, 1939, the daughter of Harvey and Esther (Stoxen) Schmidt, in Waverly, Iowa. She began her education in Country School Dayton Township #7 until the sixth grade, and then continued in Clarksville where she graduated from high school in 1957. She received her bachelor’s of arts degree from Wartburg in 1961. Jo Ann also took graduate classes from University of Northern Iowa.
On June 19, 1960, Jo Ann was united in marriage with Jerry Frederick Voss at the St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Jo Ann and Jerry made their home in Clarksville after marriage, where she lived her whole life. She began her teaching career in Plainfield School for six years, and then in the Clarksville Schools, where she taught Home Economics and Family Parenting. Jo Ann retired from teaching in 1990 after teaching 29 years at Clarksville.
Jo Ann was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville, where she was a Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the Women’s Fellowship. Jo Ann was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader. She was a member of the P.E.O. Clarksville Chapter I.T., for 52 years, she served as past president and held several other offices. She also did college research for Iowa State University. Jo Ann took pleasure in cooking and sewing for family members. She also enjoyed wild flowers and watching birds. Jo Ann delighted in giving and receiving hugs.
Jo Ann died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Melvin Bohner.
Jo Ann is survived by her husband, Jerry Voss of Clarksville, Iowa; two sons, Bryan (Karla) Voss of Clarksville, Iowa, and Carlin (Kim) French of Gilbertville, Iowa; one daughter, Cynthia Voss of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Justin and Wesley Voss, Brandon, Abigail and Gavin French, and Conner Weber; two brothers, Doug (Pat) Schmidt and Dan (Pat) Schmidt both of Clarksville, Iowa; one sister, Carolyn Bohner of Clarksville, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Paula (Dick) Grant of Waverly, Iowa; and one aunt, Bernice Hoodjer of Clarksville, Iowa.
Memorial Services will be held 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2013 at Immanuel United Church of Christ with inurnment at Lynwood Cemetery, both in Clarksville.
