Charles Hardy

U.S. Veteran

Charles Edward “Chuck” Hardy, age 81, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Harold Edward and Anna Vae (Martin) Hardy on March 29, 1931, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Chuck graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1948. He continued his education at the University of Iowa.

On June 3, 1951, Charles was united in marriage with Ione Marie Haeflinger at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Ross, Iowa. They made their home in Clarksville for a year, before Chuck was drafted into the United States Army. He served from June 3, 1952, at Camp Roberts and Fort Ord, California, as a field kitchen instructor, until he was honorably discharged on June 2, 1954.

Following the service they lived in Clarksville where Chuck worked at Allan Chevrolet & Oldsmobile in Allison, Iowa. He eventually became part-owner. He later worked in Business Administration at Hawkeye Community College and at Lloyd Weber Motorcycle Shops. He was an agent for Banker’s Life and Casualty Company and retired as the Regional Manager in Davenport in 1995.

Chuck was a 40 year member of the Community United Methodist Church in Clarksville where he served on the Church Board and assisted with many church functions. He was instrumental in starting and developing the Clarksville CARD Golf and Country Club in 1967. He was a member of a golf league for many years, Clarksville Lion’s Club, Clarksville American Legion for 50 + years and the Clarksville AMVETS.

Chuck loved collecting Coca Cola memorabilia and was a member of the Coca Cola Club of Iowa, where he served as past President and wrote their quarterly newsletter for many years. He also was a member of the Coca Cola National Club. His other interests included: member of the Tri-state Sports Car Club; enjoyed refinishing furniture; collecting guns; and enjoyed going hunting and fishing with friends and his brother, Tom.

Chuck died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife, of 60 years, Ione Hardy of Clarksville; one son, Chris (Terry) Hardy of Port Byron, IL; one daughter, Cindy (Mike) Johnson of Fairmont, MN; four grandchildren, Joshua (Tammy) Johnson, Chad (Sara) Johnson, Augusta Hardy and Georgia Hardy; four great-grandchildren, Reese, Jonah, Hayden and Collin Johnson; one brother, Tom (Anita) Hardy of Shell Rock, Iowa; an uncle, August Arjes of Clarksville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Community United Methodist Church, with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery both Clarksville.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245, and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the Community United Methodist Church.
