Karen Denise Meyer

Karen Denise Meyer, age 60, of Aplington, Iowa, was born on June 7, 1951, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Ervin Henry and Mildred Eleanor (Huisman) Meyer. She attended and graduated from the Aplington High School in 1969.

Karen was united in marriage with Harvey F. Meyer on October 6, 1973, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple then made their home in Grundy Center and Holland. Karen worked for 29 years at Iowa Radiant Electric Heat in Wellsburg and also owned and operated Electri-Craft. In the fall of 1998 they moved to a ranch near Valentine, Nebraska. Following the death of her husband, Karen returned to Aplington in May of 2008.

In her free time she enjoyed raising quarter and paint horses, Texas longhorns, and loved being outdoors. She also enjoyed quilting, attending auctions and reading. Perhaps one of her greatest joys was time spent with her family and friends.

Karen died Tuesday, May 2, 2012, at her home, from complications of pancreatic cancer, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey on April 11, 2006; and one brother, Randall Meyer on April 3, 1993.

Karen is survived by her parents, Ervin and Mildred Meyer of Aplington; one brother, Loren (Jodi) Meyer of Albia; four sisters, Debra (Roger) Heidemann of Shell Rock, Jolene (Jr.) Hippen of Wellsburg, Darcy (Doug) Bruns of Waverly, and Wendy (Kevin) Steward of Truro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the Christian Reformed Church in Austinville with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275 and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or the family.
