Calvin Dean Abbas

Calvin Dean Abbas, age 59, of Aplington, Iowa, was born April 11, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Harvey and Mildred (Fisher) Abbas. He graduated from Aplington High School in 1971 and then attended college in Calmar for carpentry.

On August 14, 1992, he was united in marriage to Darla Jean Parker-Peters. The couple made their home in Aplington on Calvin’s family farm. Over the years he worked for Harken Lumber, Hosch/Abbas Construction, and also farmed. Most recently he was a rural route carrier with the United States Postal Service.

Calvin was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Aplington Ambulance and Aplington Volunteer Fire Department. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, his pets, canoeing, carpentry, family vacations, watching westerns and spending time outdoors. Those who knew Calvin also understood his love for cutting wood and overheating his family with the wood burner at home. Perhaps one of his greatest joys was time spent with his family and friends.

Calvin passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012, at his home, from cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calvin is survived by his wife Darla of Aplington; four daughters, Glynna (Joel) Borwig of Waverly, Denielle (Bret) Badker of New Hartford, Mandy (Matt) Johnston of Aplington and Cassie (Grant Wall) Peters of Iowa Falls; ten grandchildren; three brothers, Harlan (Marabelle) Abbas of Latimer, William Abbas of Cedar Falls, Kenneth (Janet) Abbas of Houma, LA, mother and father in law Louis and Martha Parker, brother in law Steve (Jayne) Parker of Florida, Sister in law Debra (Robert) Forman of Washington, Sister in law Barbara (Andrew) Kindler of Switzerland, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Aplington.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 917 Howard Street, Aplington and will continue for one hour prior to services on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington is in charge of arrangements, (319) 347-6275.
